For the “wounded” planes that had no chance to return to their home base, an emergency landing at Vis Airport was the last hope for survival. status of “field hospital”. Many of the damaged planes managed to land on the runway, many disintegrated after landing, but many of them never made it to the island. The waters around Croatia’s most remote island are undoubtedly the richest underwater area for World War II aircraft wrecks. Beside one and only B-17 Flying fortress, on our 6 day diving itinerary, there will be other exciting airplane wrecks – PBY Catalina and B24 Lady Luck.
